However, LAX-it may not be as convenient as a curbside pickup for a few reasons. There will also be some seating areas and protection from the rain. You will find restrooms, food trucks, and charging stations at LAX-it. This location move primarily benefits drivers but doesn’t necessarily help riders. Unfortunately, the rider (you) must make the extra effort to reach the LAX-it area to find their taxi or rideshare. With LAX-it, the driver no longer has to fight airport traffic to find you. The typical rideshare or taxi rider currently waits 20 minutes for their driver to arrive curbside. But having to go to a different staging area can be an extra hassle for passengers. These changes attempt to reduce traffic jams so you can get home or hotel in Los Angeles sooner. Taxis and rideshares can still drop you off at your terminal on the departures level. The current taxi and rideshare app policy changes only affect pickups. Many LAX regulars will tell you that traffic inside the horseshoe is already over-capacity. If LAX is your home airport, you know that vehicle congestion can be stressful at peak travel times in Los Angeles. Here’s what you can expect when you travel through the second-busiest airport in the United States. However, it’s still possible to enjoy curbside pickup at LAX even after LAX-it opens. Construction will result in less curb space and increase traffic congestion on the arrivals level. This change comes as LAX begins a four-year construction project for its Automated People Mover train. As a rider, you will need to either walk or take a shuttle to find your ride. To reduce traffic congestion in the airport’s Central Terminal Area, taxis and rideshares will need to use the nearby LAX-it pickup area. Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) has taken recent steps to ban curbside pickup for taxis and Uber and Lyft rideshare drivers. Liam Pedersen is deputy general manager for research at Nissan, a CIRCLES consortium partner who was in Nashville last week for the experiment. Other lead researchers are based at the University of California, Berkeley Temple University and Rutgers University-Camden. The experiment is a project of the CIRCLES consortium, a group that includes several automakers and the U.S. The researchers were able to evaluate the effect the connected cars had on morning traffic flow using a special 4-mile stretch of I-24 outfitted with 300 pole-mounted sensors. That plan was then broadcast to the cars, which used artificial intelligence algorithms to determine the best action to take. At the cloud level, information about traffic conditions was used to create an overall speed plan. The cars’ decision-making occurred on two levels, Work said. In the experiment, the adaptive cruise control was modified to react to the overall traffic flow - including what was happening far ahead - using artificial intelligence. This technology lets the driver set a car to cruise at a certain speed, but the car automatically slows down and speeds up as needed to keep a safe distance from the car in front. They also took advantage of the adaptive cruise control that is already an option on many new vehicles. Working on the premise that if 5% of the cars on the road were acting together, they could lessen the prevalence of phantom traffic jams, the researchers equipped those 100 cars to communicate wirelessly, sending traffic information back and forth. The experiment utilized 100 cars that travelled in loops on a 15-mile section of I-24 from about 6 a.m. Then, as traffic clears, the drivers accelerate too quickly, causing more braking and yet another jam. The wave of braking continues until many cars are at a standstill. The next person has to brake even harder. The person behind them takes a second to respond and has to brake even harder. One person taps the brakes for whatever reason. “Phantom traffic jams are created by drivers like you and me,” Work explained. Before long, traffic went from a smooth flow to a series of stops and starts. Researchers there put about 20 human drivers on a circular track and asked them to drive at a constant speed. who have been studying the problem of phantom traffic jams after a simple experiment in Japan a dozen years ago showed how they develop. The professor of civil and environmental engineering at Vanderbilt University is one of a group of engineers and mathematicians from universities around the U.S. In addition to lessening driver frustration, Work said less stop-and-go driving means fuel savings and, by extension, less pollution. In the experiment, specially equipped cars were able to ease rush hour congestion on Interstate-24, researcher Daniel Work said on Tuesday. Human drivers just don’t do a good job of navigating dense traffic conditions, but an experiment using artificial intelligence in Nashville last week means help could be on the way. Accelerating with low-code: the new face of application developmentĪnd this is where low-code development comes in. This means that instead of trying to adapt a generic software solution to your business (the square cube in the round hole), you can create a solution that fits perfectly. Custom application development is the creation of software specifically designed to meet the unique needs of an organization. That’s where a customized application comes in handy. Have you ever tried to fit a square cube into a round hole? You just can’t. In fact, moving to digital solutions can be complex and time-consuming. This phenomenon, also known as digital transformation, is having a huge impact on the way we work and do business. The world around us is digitizing at a rapid pace. Since the set is the same size as CotC and the number of Commons will be roughly the same, that translates to about six more allies per four booster packs, which should lead to much better experiences with the Meltdown format and booster drafts.īut we didn’t stop there! We made those Common weapons and armor fully Neutral (i.e. With this in mind, Shattered Fates has over 70 ally slots in total (there are at least 2 allies per class), with about 30 being Common and 20 Uncommon. In formats where your deck-building pool is determined by contents of booster packs, this translated to quite low ally counts compared to what you might see in constructed decks. Call of the Crystals, which was not designed with limited play in mind, had only had 43 allies in total, with only 17 of them being Common, 18 Uncommon and 8 Rare/Epic. This decision to have more allies in the 200 card set was based primarily on our aim to give our limited formats the best chance of success. The main departure, as you can see, is that we have 10 fewer heroes and we have 5 extra allies per faction. I doubt that comes as a surprise because it’s pretty much the same as Call of the Cystals, which has, by and large, served us well. And male chimpanzees are particularly strong,” he said.ĭave Salmoni, an expert in large predators for Animal Planet, said abused and captive chimpanzees can be particularly dangerous, likening the chimps to troubled prison inmates. “Chimpanzees are known to be violent, and they can kill other animals. Neville Pillay, head of animal behavior at Wits University, said that violence in chimpanzees is not at all unusual. Many of the primates have suffered “horrible injuries and abuse from humans,” according to the sanctuary. He hasn’t spoken to all of the tourists yet, either.Ĭhimp Eden was established as a home for rescued chimpanzees. Pienaar told CNN that his preliminary findings are that human error is to blame, but he cautioned that his investigation is not complete and that he wants to interview Oberle. He works for a parks agency that makes sure zoos, sanctuaries and breeding projects comply with the law. There are no plans right now to euthanize the chimps involved in the attack, said Dries Pienaar, who is leading the investigation into the incident. The sanctuary, which is featured in the Animal Planet program “Escape to Chimp Eden,” remains closed and its staff is receiving counseling, executive director David Oosthuizen said. She said the student’s parents had requested privacy, adding that they are “quite traumatized.” Hospital spokeswoman Baard declined to discuss the nature of Oberle’s wounds. The chimp that was shot had an operation at the Johannesburg zoo to repair damage to his small and large intestines. None of the 13 tourists, most of them from local areas, were harmed, officials said. Oberle was rescued and transported for medical care. Cussons shot that chimp in the abdomen, he told CNN, and it seemed to shriek as a kind of signal to other chimps that there was a more powerful threat present. One of the chimps then charged at Cussons, he said. Two male chimps grabbed Oberle and tried to drag him under the fence, but were not able to yank him into their enclosure.Ĭussons said he estimates the attack lasted 15 minutes.Īt some point, people tried to stop the chimps, and Cussons shot two rounds in the air to see if that might get them to retreat, he said. Oberle crossed one barrier and approached a second one, which is a main fence with 24 strands of electrical wiring, Cussons said. Witnesses to the attack said that Oberle went into a no-go area because he seemed to want to remove a stone close to one of the animals that could have been picked up and thrown around, Cussons told CNN. His training included an explanation about “no-go” areas, spaces for animals where people are not supposed to go. Oberle was at the sanctuary, near Nelspruit, South Africa, for the second time after training and volunteering there in 2010. Oberle had been at the Jane Goodall Institute’s Chimp Eden since May, according to Eugene Cussons, the facility’s managing director. “He went though a 6-hour procedure of which doctors cleaned out his wounds and now it’s a case of wait and see, and just to keep him sedated and comfortable for now,” she said. An American student is in critical condition after undergoing two operations after chimpanzees tore at his body in front of tourists at a South African animal sanctuary, a hospital spokeswoman told CNN on Tuesday.Īndrew Oberle, a primatology student from the University of Texas at San Antonio, was being treated at a Johannesburg hospital after two chimps attacked him Thursday, spokeswoman Robyn Baard said.
